Stair Master
Over the last few days Reuben and I have been smashing the heck out of the utility area at the rear of the farm house.
As the Lakin is an old house we are finding some interesting things, like this newspaper from 1936 under the lino on the stairs.
The main objective of all the heavy hammer work, is to remove the staircase at the back of the farm house. Plus removing the shower, toilet, sink, doors etc.
After taking away the plaster we revealed the wooden lats. These were all bone dry and will make excellent kindling wood. Made me realise why houses burn so well.
What you can’t get any idea of in these pictures is the amount of dust that is caused by pulling plaster off of walls. Lets just say it is a lot.
Once the lats had gone, we exposed the underside of the staircase. Now it was just a case of removing the risers and treads.
Here you can see the first few stairs from the the top of the staircase have been taken away. Amazingly, hardly any swearing was used during the removal process. Honest.
This staircase was put into the back of the farm house as part of the apprentice quarters. This was a one room up one room down affair and must have been pretty basic.
Here you can see the old back stairs have gone (plus a lot more). Installed over a hundred years ago, ripped out in a day and a half.
We also took out an 80’s shower and exposed the old fireplace, which had been covered over when the shower was installed.
Now we have enough ripped out wood for the mother of all bonfires.
