No Visible Means Of Support

Picture of the old fireplaceWhenever you do renovation work to an old house, you are sure to come across something unexpected.

You know the type of thing, staircase balustrades hidden behind paneling, or Victorian tiles covered by 70’s lino.

Other discoveries are less welcome.

Whilst taking the old plaster from a wall in what will be our bedroom, I uncovered a hole in the wall where a fireplace used to be.

For reasons known only to the perpetrator the fireplace lintel has been almost completely taken out, along with the two side pieces of supporting stone.

Second picture of the old fireplaceIn place of these two pieces of stone, two wonky breeze block pillars have been installed. I’m no building engineer but even I can tell this is a top bodge.

On closer inspection you can see that the breeze block pillars don’t even meet the stonework they are supposed to be supporting.

Oh how I laughed!
